When Ministry Feels Cold
“I have worked harder, been put in prison more often, been whipped times without number, and faced death again and again… I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.”— 2 Corinthians 11:23–27 (NLT)
There’s something powerful about the honesty of Paul. He doesn’t paint ministry as glamorous. He doesn’t pretend obedience is always easy. He doesn’t hide the exhaustion, the pressure, the loneliness, or the pain. He simply tells the truth. There are seasons where serving Jesus feels warm and full of life. And there are seasons where it feels cold. Cold emotionally. Cold spiritually. Cold relationally. The kind of cold where you keep showing up, but your heart is tired. Where you keep pouring out, but feel empty yourself. Where you wonder if anyone sees the sacrifices being made behind the scenes. Paul understood that kind of cold. This wasn’t a man lacking faith. This was a faithful man carrying weight.
Sometimes we imagine that if we’re truly walking with God, life should constantly feel victorious and energized. But Scripture shows us something different: even faithful people can become weary. Even strong believers can feel worn thin. Even those called by God can have nights where they feel exposed to the elements of life. What encourages me is this: Paul didn’t quit when things got cold. He kept going. Not because he was superhuman, but because Jesus was sustaining him. Some of us today are trying so hard to look “strong” that we won’t admit we’re tired. But exhaustion is not failure. Needing rest is not weakness. Feeling the weight of life does not mean God has abandoned you. Sometimes the holiest thing you can do is simply remain faithful in the cold season. To keep praying. To keep loving. To keep worshipping. To keep showing up. To keep trusting God when the fire feels low. Because cold seasons do not last forever. The same God who was with Paul in prison, on the shipwreck, through rejection, through sleepless nights, and through hardship…is the same God walking with you now. And maybe today that’s what you need to remember: You are not forgotten in your weariness. God sees every unseen sacrifice. Every silent tear. Every tired prayer. Every moment you chose obedience when it would have been easier to walk away. The cold may be real… but so is His presence.
“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”— Jesus, Matthew 28:20
