Trusting God When You Don’t Know What to Do

Trusting God When You Don’t Know What to Do

We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You. — 2 Chronicles 20:12 There are moments in life when we simply run out of answers. The diagnosis comes. The relationship falls apart. The prodigal son leaves home. The bills pile up. The future feels uncertain. And if we’re honest, sometimes we find ourselves saying:“Lord, I don’t know what to do.” We often think faith means having everything figured out. But one of the greatest prayers in Scripture came from a king who openly admitted he had no plan.

Jehoshaphat’s Honest Prayer

In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat was surrounded by enemies. He faced a battle he knew he could not win on his own. Instead of pretending to be strong, he gathered the people and prayed:“For we have no power against this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” Notice what he didn’t say:

  • “We have this under control.”
  • “We’re strong enough.”
  • “We’ll figure it out.”

Instead, he confessed his weakness and fixed his gaze on God. Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can say is:“Lord, I don’t know what to do.”

God Never Asked You to Have All the Answers

God has never required His children to know everything. He simply asks us to trust Him. Faith is not having all the answers. Faith is knowing where to look when you don’t. When Peter walked on the water, he stayed afloat as long as his eyes were on Jesus. The moment he focused on the wind and waves, fear overwhelmed him. The same is true for us. Fear grows when our eyes are fixed on the problem. Peace grows when our eyes are fixed on the Lord.

Looking Up Instead of Giving Up

There are seasons when God intentionally brings us to the end of ourselves so that we will rediscover our dependence upon Him. Sometimes God allows us to stand in places where we don’t know what to do because He wants us to learn that He does. You may not know:

  • how things will work out.
  • what tomorrow holds.
  • how God will provide.
  • when the answer will come.

But you can know this: The One your eyes are fixed on has never lost control. He sees what you cannot see. He knows what you do not know. He is already in tomorrow.

Keep Your Eyes on Him

You don’t have to understand everything to trust God. You don’t have to know the next ten steps. Sometimes all you can do is pray:“Lord, I don’t know what to do, but my eyes are on You.” And perhaps that simple prayer is not a sign of weak faith at all. Perhaps it is one of the strongest expressions of faith a believer can make. Because when we admit our inability, we make room for God’s sufficiency. So if you find yourself overwhelmed today, take heart. You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t have to carry the weight of the world. You don’t have to know what to do. Just keep your eyes on Jesus. He knows exactly what He is doing.

Prayer

Father, there are times when I feel overwhelmed and uncertain. I confess that I don’t always know what to do, but I choose to keep my eyes on You. Help me to trust You when I cannot see the way forward. Give me peace in the waiting, courage in the unknown, and confidence in Your faithfulness. You have never failed Your people, and You will not fail me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
