Search Me, God

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23 (NIV)

It’s easy to ask God to change our circumstances. It’s much harder to ask Him to change us. David ends Psalm 139 with a courageous prayer: “Search me.” He isn’t pointing at someone else’s failures or asking God to deal with someone else’s heart. He opens his own heart before God and says, “Start with me.” That’s a dangerous prayer because God may reveal things we’ve learned to overlook. Pride we’ve justified. Bitterness we’ve carried. Fear we’ve allowed to control us. Habits we’ve hidden. Motives we haven’t questioned. Anxiety we’ve allowed to consume us. But God doesn’t search our hearts to shame us. He searches us because He loves us and wants to transform us.

Sometimes the greatest obstacle to what God wants to do through us is what we refuse to let Him deal with in us. David continues: “See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:24 (NIV) There’s a beautiful progression in David’s prayer: Search me. Know me. Test me. Lead me.

David wasn’t simply asking God to reveal what was wrong. He was giving God permission to lead him somewhere better. Maybe that needs to become our prayer today: God, show me what I cannot see about myself. Reveal anything in my heart that doesn’t honor You. Give me the humility to admit it, the courage to surrender it, and the grace to change.We spend a lot of time asking God to show us what’s next.

Maybe sometimes we need to ask Him to show us what’s inside. Before asking, “God, where are You taking me?” Pray:“Search me, God.” Because a heart willing to be searched by God is a heart ready to be led by God.

Prayer

Father, search me and know my heart. Test me and reveal the things inside me that need Your attention. Show me where fear, pride, bitterness, anxiety, or sin has taken root. Give me the courage to surrender whatever You reveal. Change my heart, renew my mind, and lead me in Your everlasting way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
