The Rocking Chair of Worry

The Rocking Chair of Worry

As the old saying goes,Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere.’” Have you ever sat in a rocking chair? You can rock back and forth for hours. There’s movement. There’s motion. It almost feels like you’re making progress. But when you finally stand up, you’re exactly where you started. That’s what worry does. It keeps our minds in constant motion without ever moving our lives forward. We replay conversations that haven’t happened yet. We imagine outcomes we can’t control. We carry burdens that don’t even belong to today. And before long, we’ve spent all of our energy without taking a single step of faith.

Jesus addressed this very issue in the Sermon on the Mount.“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” — Matthew 6:27 (ESV) It’s a simple question with an obvious answer. None of us. Worry has never solved tomorrow’s problems. It has only stolen today’s peace. That’s because worry tries to control what only God can control. Faith, on the other hand, places what we cannot control into the hands of the One who is in control. That doesn’t mean life is easy. It doesn’t mean the doctor’s report changes overnight. It doesn’t mean the financial pressure instantly disappears. It doesn’t mean your prodigal child suddenly comes home.

It means that while the circumstances may remain uncertain, the character of God never does. God has never been surprised by your situation. He has never lost sleep over your future. He has never wondered how He’s going to provide, heal, restore, or lead you. He already knows.

The invitation of Scripture isn’t to pretend your burdens don’t exist—it’s to surrender them.“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (ESV )Notice that Peter doesn’t say to organize your worries or manage them better. He says to cast them. Throw them onto the shoulders of the One who is strong enough to carry them. Every time your heart starts rocking back and forth with fear, let it become a reminder to pray instead. Trade the rocking chair for your knees. Trade anxious thoughts for trusting prayers. Trade “What if?” for “Even if… God is still faithful.”

The rocking chair will keep you busy. Jesus will move you forward.

Reflection

What burden have you been carrying that God is asking you to release today? Don’t spend another day rocking in worry when you can walk in faith.

Prayer

Father, so often I waste precious time worrying about things I cannot control. Forgive me for trying to carry what You have invited me to cast upon You. Teach me to trust Your heart even when I cannot see Your hand. Replace my anxious thoughts with Your perfect peace, and help me walk forward in faith instead of sitting still in fear. Thank You for caring so deeply for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
