The Other Side of Fear
There are two kinds of fear that shape a person’s life. One fear makes you hide from God. The other fear brings you closer to Him. One produces anxiety, insecurity, and control. The other produces wisdom, peace, surrender, and awe. The Bible calls it the fear of the Lord. Not terror. Not panic. Not the kind of fear that makes you run from God. But the kind of holy reverence that makes you realize: He is God… and I am not. And honestly, many of us are afraid of the wrong things. We fear rejection. We fear failure. We fear losing control. We fear what people think. We fear the future. We fear not having enough. We fear the pressure. We fear the unknown. But Scripture says something powerful:“The fear of man brings a snare, But whoever trusts in the Lord shall be safe.” — Proverbs 29:25 The other side of fear is freedom. Not freedom from problems. Freedom from being ruled by them.
When you begin to fear God rightly, something shifts in your heart. The opinions of people lose their grip. Circumstances lose their throne. Control loosens. Pride begins to break. Faith begins to grow. Because the fear of the Lord changes your perspective. You stop seeing God as small and your problems as big. Instead, you begin seeing God as holy, sovereign, powerful, faithful, and near. And suddenly the things that once terrified you no longer own you.
The fear of God is not about walking on eggshells around Him. It’s about standing in awe of Him. It’s realizing: He is holy. He is just. He is merciful. He holds all things together. He knows the end from the beginning. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing overpowers Him. Scripture says:“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” — Proverbs 9:10 Not the end of wisdom. The beginning. Because real wisdom starts when we stop putting ourselves at the center. The fear of the Lord teaches us surrender. It teaches us obedience even when it’s difficult. Trust even when life is unclear. Faithfulness even when culture pulls the opposite direction. It teaches us that God is not someone we casually fit into our lives. He is the Lord of our lives. And strangely enough… on the other side of fearing God is peace. Not because life becomes easy. But because your confidence is no longer in yourself.
David wrote:“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4 Notice that. Not some fears. All fears. How?Because when you stand in awe of God, lesser fears begin to shrink. You realize: If God is for me, why am I ruled by the opinions of people? If God is faithful, why am I consumed with tomorrow? If God is sovereign, why do I live as though everything depends on me? The fear of God does not produce bondage. It produces freedom. Freedom from pretending. Freedom from performance. Freedom from constantly needing approval. Freedom from carrying weights you were never meant to carry. Maybe that’s where some of us are today. Exhausted from fearing everything except God. Worried about outcomes. Consumed with image. Controlled by anxiety. Living under pressure from people, expectations, finances, uncertainty, or the future. But there is another side of fear. And on the other side is trust. On the other side is surrender. On the other side is peace that comes from knowing God is still on the throne.
The healthiest fear you will ever have is the fear of the Lord. Because when God takes His rightful place in your heart… everything else finally starts finding its proper place too.
