Taste & See
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” — Psalm 34:8 (ESV)
There are some things in life you can’t fully understand until you experience them. You can hear about a great meal all day long—but until you take a bite, you don’t really know. You can listen to someone describe peace—but until you feel it settle your soul, it’s still just words. That’s what this verse is inviting us into. Not just information. Not just observation. But participation.“Taste and see…” God isn’t asking you to figure everything out first. He’s not demanding that you have all your questions answered before you come close. He’s simply saying: Come experience Me.
Faith Isn’t Just Learned—It’s Experienced
So many people approach God from a distance. They analyze. They question. They observe others. But they never step in close enough to taste. And yet, the goodness of God is not something you fully grasp from afar. It’s something you discover in relationship.
- In the quiet moments when He meets you in your anxiety
- In the strength He gives when you feel like you’re at your limit
- In the peace that doesn’t make sense but shows up anyway
You don’t just learn that God is good… you begin to know it.
His Goodness Isn’t Based on Your Circumstances
Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say, “Taste and see that life is easy.” or “Taste and see that everything will go your way.” It says: “The Lord is good.”That means His goodness is constant—even when life isn’t. You can be in the middle of pressure… and still taste His peace. You can be walking through uncertainty… and still experience His presence. You can be carrying weight… and still find refuge in Him.
Blessed Is the One Who Runs to Him
The second half of the verse shifts from invitation to promise: “Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” Refuge means safety. Covering. Protection. It’s the place you run to when everything else feels unstable. And here’s the truth: We all run to something.
- Some run to control
- Some run to distraction
- Some run to people
- Some run to comfort
But this verse reminds us—there is only one refuge that never fails. God Himself. And the one who runs to Him… is blessed. Not because life is perfect, but because they are covered.
A Simple Invitation
This isn’t complicated. It’s an invitation. If you’ve been standing at a distance… if you’ve been trying to figure everything out before stepping in…
Start here:
- Spend time with Him, even if it feels small
- Open His Word, even if you don’t have all the answers
- Talk to Him honestly, even if your prayers feel imperfect
Just take a step.Taste. And see. You might find that what your soul has been searching for… has been right in front of you all along.
A Prayer
Lord, Thank You that Your goodness is not something we have to chase—it’s something we can experience. Teach us to come close, not just observe from a distance. Help us to trust You enough to take that step, to taste and see for ourselves. And in every season, remind us that You are our refuge—steady, faithful, and good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
