Power and Love and Self Control

Power and Love and Self Control

There are moments when fear doesn’t knock politely—it just walks in and takes a seat. It fills your thoughts. It whispers worst-case scenarios. It makes you hesitate, shrink back, and second-guess what you know God has called you to do. And right into that space, the Word of God speaks with clarity and authority through Second Epistle to Timothy:For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. — 2 Timothy 1:7. This isn’t just encouragement. It’s correction. It’s a reminder of what actually comes from God… and what doesn’t.

Fear Doesn’t Come From Him

Fear may feel real—but it isn’t from the Lord. That anxious spiral. That constant dread. That voice telling you you’re not enough, not ready, or not able. That’s not God’s voice. Because what God gives never contradicts who He is. And He is not unstable, not uncertain, not intimidated. So when fear begins to take over, we have to learn to recognize it for what it is: an intruder, not an inheritance.

You’ve Been Given Power

The word “power” here isn’t hype—it’s Holy Spirit strength. It’s the ability to stand when everything in you wants to run. To keep going when it would be easier to quit. To speak truth even when your voice shakes. This is the kind of power that doesn’t come from personality… It comes from presence. God doesn’t just tell you to be strong—He fills you with strength.

You’ve Been Given Love

Fear isolates. Love moves toward. Fear says, “Protect yourself.” Love says, “Trust God and step forward anyway.” When God fills your heart with His love, it begins to push out fear. Not because everything suddenly feels safe… But because you know Who is with you. And His love becomes louder than your fear.

You’ve Been Given a Sound Mind

That phrase “self-control” can also be understood as a sound mind. Clear thinking. Steady perspective. A mind that isn’t constantly spiraling. Fear brings confusion. God brings clarity .Fear exaggerates. God stabilizes. When you feel mentally overwhelmed, it’s not a sign to give up— it’s an invitation to return to the truth.

Right Now—Where This Meets You

Maybe fear has been loud lately.

  • Fear about your family
  • Fear about your future
  • Fear about finances, decisions, or things you can’t control

But hear this clearly: That fear is not from God. You don’t have to accept it. You don’t have to live under it. You don’t have to let it define you. Because what God has already given you is greater.

A Prayer

Lord, You see how real the fear feels sometimes. You see the thoughts, the pressure, the weight it brings. But Your Word is clear— this is not from You. So today, I lay that fear down. Fill me again with Your Spirit. Remind me that I’ve been given power—not to run, but to stand. Love—not to hide, but to trust. And a sound mind—not chaos, but clarity. When fear tries to rise, anchor me in Your truth. When my thoughts start to spiral, steady me in Your presence. I don’t want to live led by fear— I want to live led by You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Thought

Fear may show up… but it doesn’t get to stay. Not when you remember what God has already placed inside of you.You were not given fear.
 You were given power.
 So stand in it.
