Keep Knocking

Keep Knocking

Matthew 7:7–12 (ESV)

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you... So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets."

Few passages have encouraged believers more than these words from Jesus. They are simple enough for a child to understand, yet deep enough to sustain a lifetime of faith. At first glance, this passage seems to be about getting what we want. But Jesus isn't handing us a blank check. He's inviting us into a relationship with a good Father.

Ask

Prayer begins with dependence. God already knows what we need, yet He invites us to ask. Why? Because asking reminds us that we are not self-sufficient. Every answered prayer becomes another testimony of His faithfulness, and every delayed answer becomes another opportunity to trust Him. The invitation is not merely, "Tell God what you want." It is, "Come to your Father."

Seek

Seeking requires pursuit. There are seasons when God seems silent. We pray, yet answers don't come as quickly as we'd hoped. Jesus doesn't tell us to quit during those moments. He tells us to keep seeking. Seek His wisdom before seeking solutions. Seek His presence before seeking comfort. Seek His kingdom before seeking your own plans. Sometimes the greatest answer to prayer isn't that our circumstances change—it's that God changes us while we wait.

Knock

Knocking speaks of perseverance. A person who knocks expects someone to answer. Faith keeps knocking even when the door doesn't immediately open. Not because we're trying to convince God to care, but because we already know He does. Some doors remain closed because God has something better. Some stay shut because His timing is different from ours. Others open only after we've learned to trust Him more than the answer itself. Keep knocking.

A Good Father Gives Good Gifts

Jesus compares our imperfect love with the perfect love of our heavenly Father. If earthly parents desire good things for their children, how much more does God delight in giving what is truly good? That doesn't mean He gives us everything we ask for. It means He always gives us what is best. Looking back over life, many of us can thank God for unanswered prayers just as much as answered ones. His wisdom has always exceeded ours.

The Golden Rule

Jesus concludes with one of the most quoted verses in history:

"Whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them."

Notice how naturally this flows from everything before it. When we understand how generously God has treated us, we become generous toward others. Those who have received grace extend grace. Those who have experienced mercy show mercy. Those who know the Father's kindness become people marked by kindness. Our relationship with God should always overflow into our relationships with people.

Keep Coming

Jesus doesn't say to ask once. He doesn't say to seek until you get tired. He doesn't say to knock only when life is easy. He simply invites us to keep coming. Ask. Seek. Knock. Your Father hears. Your Father knows. Your Father loves you. And whether His answer is yesno, or wait, you can trust that every answer comes from the hands of a perfectly good Father.

"Lord, teach us to keep asking with faith, seeking with perseverance, and knocking with confidence. Help us trust Your heart even when we don't understand Your timing. May Your kindness shape the way we treat others, so that our lives reflect the goodness of our heavenly Father. Amen."
