Honest Questions in Waiting
How Long, O Lord?
Psalm 13:1–2 “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?” — Psalm 13:1–2
There are moments in life when faith feels more like waiting than winning. David opens Psalm 13 with two painful words repeated again and again: “How long?”How long until this pain ends? How long until the prayers are answered? How long until God changes the situation? How long until the sorrow lifts? If you’ve ever asked those questions, you’re in good company. David did too.
God Can Handle Honest Prayers
One of the beautiful things about the Psalms is that they give us permission to be honest. David doesn’t pretend everything is fine. He doesn’t hide his confusion or suppress his emotions. He pours out his heart. Sometimes we think faith means always sounding positive. But biblical faith isn’t pretending. It is bringing our real struggles into the presence of God. God is not offended by your questions. He would rather hear your honest cries than your polished speeches.
Sorrow Has a Way of Turning Inward
David says, “How long must I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily?” When pain lingers, we often become trapped inside our own thoughts. We replay fears, imagine worst-case scenarios, and try to solve problems we cannot control. The longer we sit alone with our sorrow, the louder our worries become. But we were never meant to carry our burdens by ourselves. What David begins with questions, he eventually turns into prayer. And that’s the difference. There is a big difference between talking to yourself and talking to God.
Delays Are Not Abandonment
David felt forgotten. But feelings are not always facts. God had not abandoned David. God was working even in the waiting. Many times, heaven seems silent, but silence does not mean absence. The God who seems hidden is still present. The God who appears delayed is still faithful. The waiting seasons often become the places where trust grows deepest.
Bring Your “How Long?” to God
Perhaps today your heart is asking:
- How long until healing comes?
- How long until the prodigal returns?
- How long until the financial pressure eases?
- How long until the grief becomes lighter?
- How long until I feel joy again?
God is not asking you to hide those questions. He is inviting you to bring them to Him. You may not have all the answers, but you do have access to the One who holds them. And while Psalm 13 begins with “How long?”, it ends with “I will trust.” Waiting does not have to destroy your faith. Sometimes waiting is where faith learns to sing.
Prayer
Lord, there are days when my heart asks, “How long?” Thank You that You are not afraid of my questions or discouraged by my tears. Help me to bring my sorrow to You instead of carrying it alone. When I cannot see what You are doing, remind me that You have not forgotten me. Teach me to trust You even in the waiting. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
