God’s Strength, Not Yours

God’s Strength, Not Yours

Be Strong in the Lord

One of the greatest misconceptions in the Christian life is that God calls us to be strong on our own. We admire people who seem fearless, resilient, and unshakable. We tell one another to “stay strong” or “hang in there.” While those words are well intentioned, they can unintentionally place the weight of the battle on our own shoulders.

That isn’t what Scripture tells us. Paul writes,“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.” — Ephesians 6:10 Notice what he doesn’t say. He doesn’t say, “Be strong in yourself.” He doesn’t say, “Dig a little deeper.” He doesn’t say, “Try harder.” He says, “Be strong in the Lord.”

That changes everything. Our strength has never been the source of our victory. God’s strength is. When Paul wrote these words, he was preparing believers for the reality of spiritual warfare. The Christian life is not a playground—it is a battlefield. Every day we face temptation, discouragement, doubt, fear, pride, distraction, and the schemes of the enemy. If we try to fight those battles in our own strength, we will eventually find ourselves exhausted and defeated. But God never intended for us to fight alone. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead now dwells in every believer through the Holy Spirit.

The strength we need is not something we manufacture; it is something we receive as we abide in Christ. Jesus said it this way: Apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) Those words are not meant to discourage us—they are meant to free us. There is incredible peace in realizing that God never expected us to carry what only He can carry. Being strong in the Lord looks like beginning your day in His Word before facing the world’s demands. It looks like choosing prayer instead of panic. It looks like trusting God’s promises when your emotions tell a different story. It looks like obeying Him even when obedience is difficult because you know His strength is sufficient.

Paul himself learned this lesson through suffering. After pleading with the Lord to remove his thorn in the flesh, God’s answer was not immediate relief but abundant grace. My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:9) What an incredible reminder. Our weakness is not an obstacle to God’s work; it is often the place where His power is displayed most clearly. Maybe today you feel tired. Maybe you’ve been trying to carry your family, your ministry, your finances, your health, or your future in your own strength.

The invitation of Scripture is simple: stop relying on yourself and begin relying on the Lord. His strength never runs out. His power never weakens. His faithfulness never changes. So whatever battle you are facing today, don’t simply try to be stronger. Be strong in the Lord. When you do, you’ll discover that His strength is more than enough for every battle you face.

Prayer
Father, thank You that You have never asked me to live the Christian life in my own strength. Forgive me for the times I rely on myself instead of You. Teach me to abide in Christ, depend on Your Spirit, and trust in Your mighty power. Help me stand firm against every scheme of the enemy, knowing that You are faithful and Your strength is sufficient. May my life reflect not my ability, but Your greatness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
