Finding Joy in God’s Purpose Through Trials
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds.” — James 1:2 At first glance, James’ words almost seem impossible. Joy? In trials? Most of us would understand if Scripture said, “Endure it,” or “Survive it.” But God goes further. He tells us to count it all joy. Notice that James does not say, “Feel joyful about every hardship.” He says to count it joy.
Joy is not denying pain. Joy is choosing to trust that God is doing something greater than what we can currently see. Trials come in many forms:
- unanswered prayers
- broken relationships
- health struggles
- financial pressure
- disappointment
- seasons that are simply not what we thought they would be
None of these things are enjoyable. Yet God promises that none of them are wasted. James continues: “Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.” — James 1:3–4
God is not merely trying to get us through the storm. He is using the storm to shape us.We often pray for God to remove the pressure, but sometimes He uses the pressure to produce perseverance. He uses waiting to deepen trust. He uses weakness to teach dependence. He uses difficulties to make us more like Christ. The joy isn’t found in the trial itself. The joy is found in knowing:
- God is still with us.
- God is still working.
- God has not abandoned us.
- God can redeem what we do not understand.
Jesus Himself endured the cross because of “the joy that was set before Him” (Hebrews 12:2). He looked beyond the suffering to the victory that would come. Maybe today you’re carrying something heavy. Perhaps life isn’t what you thought it would be. You don’t have to pretend everything is fine. God isn’t asking for fake smiles or shallow optimism. He is inviting you to trust Him. Because one day you may look back and realize that the season you would never have chosen became the very season God used to strengthen your faith, deepen your character, and draw you closer to Himself. So count it all joy. Not because the trial is good. But because God is good.
Prayer
Father, some days it is hard to understand what You are doing. Help me to trust You when life is difficult. Teach me to see beyond my circumstances and remember that You are working even when I cannot see it. Produce perseverance in me and draw me closer to You. Thank You that no trial is wasted in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
