“Fear, He Is a Liar”
There’s a reason that song hits so deeply. Because most of us know exactly what it feels like to sit under the weight of fear. Not just big dramatic fear — but the quiet kind too. The fear that creeps in slowly. The fear that whispers while you’re driving home. The fear that keeps you awake at night replaying conversations, imagining worst-case scenarios, and wondering how everything is going to work out. The song “Fear Is a Liar” by Zach Williams captures something every believer wrestles with:“Fear, he is a liar…”
That one line alone carries so much truth. Because fear doesn’t just attack your circumstances. It attacks your identity. Fear says: “You’ll never be enough.” “You’ve failed too many times.” “God can’t use you anymore.” “You’ll always struggle.” “You’re alone.” And if we’re honest, sometimes those lies sound believable.
That’s what fear does. It speaks loudly. It speaks emotionally. It speaks constantly. But just because fear speaks doesn’t mean fear is telling the truth. Another lyric says:“He will rob your rest…” How true is that? Fear steals peace. It steals sleep. It steals joy. It steals perspective. It keeps marriages from healing. It keeps people from stepping out in faith. It keeps believers silent when God is calling them forward. Fear has a way of making temporary battles feel permanent. But God’s truth is stronger than fear’s lies. 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us:“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (ESV) Fear may show up, but it does not have authority over the child of God. The song continues with the reminder:“Cast your fear in the fire…” What a picture of surrender. Not managing fear. Not hiding fear. Not pretending fear doesn’t exist. But bringing it to Jesus. When Peter stepped out onto the water, fear told him the waves were greater than the One who called him out of the boat. The moment Peter fixed his eyes on the storm instead of Jesus, he began to sink. Fear always shifts our focus. But faith fixes our eyes back on Christ. Maybe today fear has been lying to you.Maybe it’s been telling you:
- your family will never heal
- your calling is over
- your future is hopeless
- your failures define you
- your anxiety will always control you
But fear does not get the final word. God does. And throughout Scripture, God continually tells His people: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” Not because life is easy. Not because the road is smooth. But because His presence changes everything. So today, hear this clearly: Fear may speak loudly. But Jesus speaks louder. Fear may try to shake you. But it cannot separate you from the love of God. Because fear is a liar… and God has always been faithful.
