Emotional numbness and unwavering faith

Emotional numbness and unwavering faith

There are seasons in life when you expect yourself to feel something, but you don’t. You know God is good, but you don’t feel joyful. You know you are loved, but you don’t feel loved. You know you should be excited, grateful, hopeful, or passionate, but instead you feel numb, tired, or emotionally empty. It can feel as though something has been stolen from you.

David Knew This Feeling

David wrote: “Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.”— Psalm 42:11 Notice that David didn’t pretend his emotions were fine. He acknowledged the turmoil within him. Yet he refused to allow his feelings to have the final word. He preached truth to his own soul.

Emotions Are Gifts, Not Gods

God created emotions. They are not enemies, but they were never meant to be masters. Sometimes grief, stress, anxiety, disappointment, sickness, exhaustion, or spiritual battles can leave us emotionally depleted. We may not feel the things we once felt. But our faith was never built upon feelings.Feelings are real. But they are not always reliable.

You Can Be Faithful Even When You Feel Empty

You can worship without feeling emotional. You can pray without feeling inspired. You can trust God without feeling confident. You can love others even when your heart feels weary. Faithfulness is not measured by emotional intensity. Sometimes the greatest act of faith is simply continuing to walk with God when your emotions have gone silent.

Don’t Condemn Yourself

If you are in a season where joy feels distant, don’t assume God has abandoned you. And don’t conclude that something is wrong with you. Even Jesus experienced deep sorrow. Even Elijah sat under a tree and wanted to give up. Even David cried out in despair. God is not frightened by your emotional exhaustion. He meets people there.

God Restores What Has Been Stolen

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). He restores strength. He renews hope. He gives beauty for ashes. And though you may not feel it today, joy will come again. Not because circumstances suddenly become perfect, but because the God who holds your heart has not changed.

If you feel as though life has robbed you of your emotions, remember this: You do not have to feel God’s presence to be held by Him. The Father has not let go of you. And one day, perhaps sooner than you think, you will say with David: “I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.” Until then, hold on. The God who restores souls is still restoring yours.
