Dependence on Christ: True Strength in Weakness
I Can Do All Things Through Christ… Not Through Myself
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
Philippians 4:13 may be one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many people read it as, “I can do all things because I am strong enough.” But that is not what Paul said. He didn’t say, “I can do all things through determination.”He didn’t say, “I can do all things through positive thinking.” He didn’t say, “I can do all things through myself.” He said, “through Christ.” That changes everything.
We Were Never Meant to Carry Life Alone
Our culture celebrates self-reliance.“Believe in yourself.” “Trust yourself.”“You’ve got this.” But Scripture points us somewhere far better. It points us to dependence on Christ. Paul wrote these words while sitting in prison. He wasn’t standing on a stage after a victory. He wasn’t enjoying comfort or success. He had experienced hunger, suffering, disappointment, and uncertainty. Yet he could say:“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” (Philippians 4:11) His confidence wasn’t in his circumstances. His confidence wasn’t in his abilities. His confidence was in Jesus.
Christ Is Our Strength
Sometimes we think God expects us to be strong all the time. But the gospel tells us something different. God doesn’t ask us to be sufficient. He asks us to stay connected to the One who is. When we are weak, Christ is strong. When we are weary, Christ sustains. When we don’t know what to do, Christ gives wisdom. When we feel like we have reached the end of ourselves, we discover that His grace is more than enough. The Christian life is not about proving how capable we are. It is about learning how dependent we are.
Strength for Whatever God Calls Us To
Paul wasn’t saying believers can accomplish every dream they imagine. He was saying that whatever God allows, whatever God calls us to, and whatever season we find ourselves in, Christ will provide the strength we need. Strength to endure. Strength to forgive. Strength to persevere. Strength to remain faithful. Strength to keep trusting. Not because we are enough. But because Jesus is.
Stop Looking Within
There comes a point where we must stop looking within ourselves for the answer. Our hope is not found in our willpower. Our hope is not found in our talents. Our hope is not found in having everything figured out. Our hope is found in Christ. And the beautiful truth is this: You do not have to be enough. You do not have to carry everything. You do not have to pretend to be strong. Jesus never said, “Do all things through yourself.” He said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) But with Him? You can walk through the valleys. You can endure the trials. You can remain faithful. You can keep going. Not because you are strong—but because Christ is.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for trying to live in my own strength. So often I rely on myself instead of depending on You. Teach me to trust You more deeply and to remember that my strength does not come from within, but from Christ who lives in me. Help me to rest in Your grace and walk faithfully in whatever You have called me to. Amen.
