Blessed Are…

Blessed Are…

There is something powerful about the word blessed. Not successful. Not admired. Not comfortable. Not applauded. Blessed. When Jesus sat on the mountainside in Matthew 5, He began teaching with words that completely flipped the world upside down. The people expected strength, status, power, and control to define blessing. But Jesus said:“Blessed are the poor in spirit…” “Blessed are those who mourn…” “Blessed are the meek…” “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness…” — The Gospel of Matthew

The Kingdom of God does not operate the way the world does. The world says: blessed are the strong. Jesus says: blessed are the surrendered. The world says: blessed are the ones who never break. Jesus says: blessed are those who know they need Him. Sometimes we spend so much energy trying to appear “put together” that we miss the very posture God blesses most — dependence.

Jesus begins with:“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” To be poor in spirit means to recognize your need for God. It is the understanding that apart from Him, we are empty. It is the end of self-sufficiency. And strangely enough… that is where blessing begins. Not when we have everything figured out. Not when life is polished. Not when faith feels effortless. But when we come to God honestly. Broken. Hungry. Needing grace. The beautiful thing about Jesus is that He never pushed away the weary. He welcomed them. The religious world often rewards appearances. Jesus responds to humility. Maybe today you feel weak. Maybe tired. Maybe stretched thin. Maybe disappointed in yourself. Do not miss this: your need for God is not a weakness to hide — it is often the very place where His blessing starts to grow.

The Beatitudes remind us that heaven values different things than earth does. Blessed are the merciful. Blessed are the peacemakers. Blessed are the pure in heart. Blessed are those who endure persecution for righteousness’ sake. This is not weakness. This is Kingdom living. And in a world obsessed with image, noise, and self-promotion, Jesus still quietly calls people to humility, holiness, mercy, and dependence. Blessed are……the ones who still trust God in grief. …the ones who choose mercy over revenge. …the ones who hunger for righteousness more than approval. …the ones who keep showing up with honest faith. …the ones who know they cannot make it without Jesus. Those are the people Heaven calls blessed.
