Strength When You’re Running on Empty

Strength When You’re Running on Empty

"Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint"   Isaiah 40:30–31 ESV

There are seasons in life where you don’t just feel tired… you feel done. Not physically exhausted from a long day— but soul-deep weary from carrying things that don’t seem to let up. Pressure. Responsibility. Waiting. Unanswered prayers. And if we’re honest, even the strongest people hit that place.

Even the Strong Get Tired

Isaiah doesn’t sugarcoat it. He says even youths—the ones with energy, drive, and strength—still grow tired. Even the ones who look like they’ve got it all together eventually hit a wall. That matters… because sometimes we think: “If I were stronger, I wouldn’t feel like this.” “If my faith was bigger, I wouldn’t be struggling.” But Scripture reminds us: weariness isn’t weakness—it’s part of being human.

The Difference Maker: Waiting on the Lord

The turning point in this passage isn’t effort…it’s waiting.“But they who wait for the Lord…” That word “wait” isn’t passive. It’s not sitting back doing nothing. It carries the idea of trusting, leaning, expecting, staying connected. It’s the person who says: “God, I don’t have what I need right now… but I know You do.” It’s choosing His presence over panic. His promises over your feelings. His timing over your control.

Renewed, Not Replaced

God doesn’t always remove the situation…but He renews your strength inside it. Notice the progression:

  • Mount up with wings like eagles → God lifts you above what you couldn’t rise above on your own
  • Run and not be weary → He gives you endurance for the pace
  • Walk and not faint → Even in the slow, steady seasons… He sustains you

Some days feel like flying. Some feel like running. And some feel like just putting one foot in front of the other.God meets you in all three.

When You Feel Like You’re About to Quit

This promise isn’t for people who have it all together. It’s for the one who feels like: “I don’t know if I can keep doing this.” “I’m tired of carrying this weight.” “I’ve been waiting… and nothing’s changing.” And God gently reminds you: You don’t have to manufacture strength—
you just have to stay connected to the One who gives it.

A Simple Prayer

Lord, You see the places where I’m tired. The places where I feel like I’m running on empty.Teach me what it means to wait on You— not just in stillness, but in trust. Renew my strength. Lift my eyes. Help me keep walking, even when it feels slow. I believe You will carry me through. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Thought

You may feel weary today…but you’re not without hope. If you stay anchored in Him, the strength you need will meet you right where you are. Keep waiting. Keep trusting. He’s not done sustaining you yet.
