Seeing Change as God's Faithfulness
There is something about change that unsettles us. We like familiar. We like routines. We like knowing what tomorrow will look like. We become comfortable with the people, places, and seasons that have shaped our lives. Then, almost without warning, God begins to move things around. Doors close. New opportunities arise. People come and go. Ministries shift. Dreams evolve. Life looks different than it did yesterday.
If we're honest, our first reaction is often grief rather than gratitude. We ask, "Why is this happening?" "What did I do wrong?" "Couldn't things just stay the way they were?" But what if we're looking at change through the wrong lens? What if some of the greatest evidence of God's faithfulness is not that He keeps everything the same—but that He faithfully leads us into what is next?Throughout Scripture, God is constantly leading His people through seasons of change. He called Abraham to leave everything familiar and walk toward a land he had never seen. He led Israel out of Egypt, through the wilderness, and into the Promised Land. He took David from the pasture to the palace. He transformed fearful fishermen into bold apostles. And He took Saul, a persecutor of the church, and made him Paul, one of the greatest missionaries in history.
At every turn, change wasn't evidence that God had abandoned His people. It was evidence that He was actively working. God's faithfulness doesn't always look like stability. Sometimes it looks like movement. Sometimes His faithfulness is seen in the relationships He brings into our lives—and sometimes in the ones He lovingly asks us to release. Sometimes His faithfulness opens a door we never imagined walking through. Sometimes it closes one we desperately wanted to keep open. The beautiful truth is that God never changes, even though our circumstances constantly do.
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." — Hebrews 13:8
Everything around us may shift, but the One leading us never does. That means we don't have to fear change because the same God who carried us through yesterday is already waiting for us in tomorrow. Looking back over my own life, I've realized that almost every season I now thank God for began as a season I didn't understand. The hard conversations. The unexpected moves. The closed doors. The ministry transitions. The disappointments. At the time, they felt painful.
Looking back, they became monuments of God's faithfulness. He wasn't taking something from me. He was leading me somewhere I couldn't yet see. Maybe that's where you are today. Perhaps life isn't what you thought it would be. Maybe relationships have changed. Your career looks different. Your family is walking through transition. Your church is entering a new season. Or maybe God is simply stretching your faith beyond what feels comfortable. Don't mistake change for God's absence. It may actually be one of the clearest signs of His presence.
The Shepherd doesn't leave His sheep in one pasture forever. He leads them to fresh fields, quiet waters, and new places where they can grow. His leading often requires movement. And every step is marked by His faithfulness. So instead of asking, "Why is everything changing?" perhaps we should begin asking, "Lord, what are You preparing me for?"
Because God is always working. Always leading. Always shaping. Always faithful. The next chapter may feel unfamiliar, but it is not uncertain. The Author has already written it. Trust the One who never changes, even when everything else does.
Reflection
What change are you resisting today? Instead of seeing it as an interruption, ask God to help you see it as an invitation. His faithfulness is not found in keeping your life comfortable. His faithfulness is found in never leaving your side as He leads you exactly where you need to be.
