You Find Life When You Let Go
“Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” — Matthew 10:39
Jesus has a way of turning our thinking upside down. The world tells us, “Find yourself.” Jesus tells us, “Lose yourself.” The world says, “Hold on to your life.” Jesus says, “Surrender it to Me.” The world says, “Do whatever makes you happy.” Jesus says, “Follow Me, and I’ll show you what life really is.”Matthew 10:39 sounds like a contradiction until we understand what Jesus means. Jesus isn’t telling us to throw our lives away. He is telling us to stop trying to build a life apart from Him. Sometimes we hold tightly to our plans, our dreams, our comfort, our relationships, our reputation, and our expectations. We spend so much energy trying to protect the life we think we need that we miss the life Jesus is inviting us into.
Following Jesus requires surrender. There will be moments when obedience costs you something. There will be times when following Jesus means saying no to yourself so you can say yes to Him. That’s discipleship. Jesus said earlier:“And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” — Matthew 10:38 The cross wasn’t a symbol of comfort. It was a symbol of death. Following Jesus means there are things in me that must die—my pride, my need for control, my selfish desires, my insistence on having everything happen my way. But here’s the beautiful paradox: When you lose your life for Jesus, you don’t end up with less life. You discover real life. You discover that His plans are greater than your plans. His purpose is greater than your comfort. His presence is greater than your possessions. And what you surrender into His hands is safer than what you desperately try to hold in your own.
Maybe you’ve been trying hard to hold everything together. Jesus may be inviting you to open your hands. You don’t have to know exactly where surrender will take you. You simply have to know Who you’re surrendering to. The Christian life isn’t about adding Jesus to the life you’ve already planned. It’s about laying your life before Him and saying: “Jesus, it’s Yours.” My plans are Yours. My future is Yours. My family is Yours. My gifts are Yours. My resources are Yours. My time is Yours. My life is Yours. Because eventually we discover something that sounds impossible until we’ve lived it: The life you surrender to Jesus is the life you finally begin to find.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to You. Forgive me for the places where I’ve tried to hold on, control everything, or build my life without You at the center. Give me the courage to take up my cross and follow You, even when it costs me something. Teach me to trust that what I place in Your hands is never wasted. My plans, my future, my desires, and my life belong to You. Help me lose my life for Your sake so that I can discover the life You created me to live. Amen.
