When You Don't Know What's Ahead

When You Don't Know What's Ahead

You may not know what tomorrow holds, but you know Who goes with you.

SCRIPTURE “Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid of them! The LORD your God will go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6 (NLT)

There’s something unsettling about not knowing what comes next. I like having a plan. I like knowing where things are headed and having some idea of how everything is going to work out. But life doesn't always give us that luxury. Sometimes we find ourselves facing situations we never expected. Doors close. Plans change. Answers don't come. And suddenly, we're standing in a place where we can't see what the next step looks like. It's in those moments that fear can begin to creep in. What if things don't work out? What if I make the wrong decision? What if I'm not strong enough for what's ahead? I wonder if the Israelites felt some of those same emotions. In Deuteronomy 31, Moses was preparing God's people for a major transition. After leading them through the wilderness for forty years, he would not be going with them into the Promised Land. Joshua would become their new leader, and the people were about to face unfamiliar territory, powerful enemies, and challenges they had never encountered before. They had every reason to feel uncertain. But Moses reminded them of something far more important than the challenges ahead: God was going with them.

Notice what God didn't promise. He didn't promise that the journey would be easy. He didn't promise there wouldn't be battles, obstacles, or moments when they felt overwhelmed. He promised His presence. And sometimes that's the very thing we need to remember. We spend so much time asking God to show us what's ahead. We want the details, the answers, and the reassurance that everything will turn out the way we're hoping. But God doesn't always give us a preview of what's coming. Instead, He reminds us that we won't have to face it alone. I love that Moses didn't simply tell the people to be strong. He gave them a reason to be strong. The Lord their God would go ahead of them. He would not fail them. He would not abandon them. Their courage wasn't supposed to come from their own ability to handle whatever happened next. It came from knowing the One who was leading them.

Maybe you're facing something right now that feels bigger than you. Maybe you're walking into a new season, waiting for an answer, or trying to figure out how you're going to make it through something you never imagined facing. You don't have to have it all figured out today. You don't have to know every step. And you certainly don't have to depend on your own strength to get through it. The same God who has been faithful behind you is already at work ahead of you. So take the next step. Even if it's small. Even if your knees are shaking. Even if you don't have all the answers. Be strong and courageous, not because you know what tomorrow holds, but because you know the God who promises to walk with you through it. And He isn't going anywhere.

A THOUGHT TO CARRY WITH YOU Faith isn't always knowing where God is leading. Sometimes it's simply trusting that wherever He leads, He will be there.

PRAYER Lord, You know how easily I become anxious when I can't see what's ahead. Forgive me for the times I've allowed fear to speak louder than Your promises. Remind me that I don't need to know everything that's coming because You are already there. Give me courage to take the next step, strength to trust You in the uncertainty, and peace in knowing You will never leave me or abandon me. In Jesus' name, amen.
