Trusting Jesus as the Author and Finisher of Faith

Trusting Jesus as the Author and Finisher of Faith

“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…” — Hebrews 12:2 (NKJV)

There are seasons when faith feels strong. You can see what God is doing. You’re excited about where He is leading. Doors are opening. Prayers are being answered. Everything seems to be moving in the right direction. And then there are seasons when faith feels like simply putting one foot in front of the other. You’re tired. The prayer hasn’t been answered. The situation hasn’t changed. The door hasn’t opened. And somewhere along the way, you begin wondering, “God, are You still writing this story?” Hebrews gives us a beautiful reminder: Jesus is both the Author and the Finisher of our faith. That means the One who started the work is also the One who intends to finish it.

He Is the Author

An author sees something the characters in the story cannot see. The whole story. We see the chapter we’re living in. God sees the beginning, the middle, and the end. We see the disappointment. He sees what He is developing through it. We see the closed door. He sees where He is redirecting us. We see the waiting. He sees what He is preparing. One of the hardest things about following Jesus is trusting Him when the chapter we are living doesn’t make sense. But here’s what we have to remember: A difficult chapter doesn’t mean the Author has lost control of the story. You may not understand what God is writing right now, but you can trust the One holding the pen.

He Is the Finisher

Jesus doesn’t just begin things. He finishes them. Philippians 1:6 says: “He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” God isn’t halfway finished with you. Your struggle isn’t the conclusion. Your failure isn’t the final sentence. Your disappointment isn’t the ending. Your waiting isn’t wasted. There are things God is developing in you right now that you may not recognize until later. Faith. Endurance. Humility. Dependence. Compassion. Character. Sometimes we’re asking God to change what’s happening around us, while God is doing His deepest work within us.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

Hebrews doesn’t tell us to figure everything out. It tells us where to look.“Looking unto Jesus…” Because whatever has your attention will eventually influence your heart. If you constantly look at the problem, fear grows. If you constantly look at what you don’t have, discouragement grows. If you constantly look at other people’s lives, comparison grows. But when you look to Jesus, faith grows. Maybe today you don’t need another explanation. Maybe you simply need to lift your eyes again. Away from the circumstances. Away from the unanswered questions. Away from everything you cannot control. And back to Jesus.

Don’t Quit in the Middle of the Chapter

Maybe you’re living through a chapter you would have never chosen. Don’t mistake the middle of your story for the end of your story. God is still writing. You may not see how everything fits together yet. You may not understand why this season has lasted so long. You may not know what the next chapter holds. But you know the Author. And sometimes faith is simply saying: “Jesus, I don’t understand what You’re writing, but I trust Your hand.” Keep walking. Keep praying. Keep believing. Keep your eyes on Jesus. Because the Author of your faith is also the Finisher of your faith. And He isn’t finished yet.

Prayer

Jesus, when I don’t understand the chapter I’m living in, help me trust the Author. When I’m tired and tempted to give up, remind me that You are still working. Take my eyes off my circumstances and fix them again on You. Finish the work You have started in me. I trust You with the parts of my story I understand and the parts I don’t. In Jesus’ name, amen.
