The Value of a Good Name
“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” — Proverbs 22:1 (ESV)
What comes to mind when people hear your name? It's an interesting question because we spend so much of our lives thinking about what we're building, what we're accomplishing, and what we're leaving behind. We work hard to provide for our families, create opportunities, and establish some measure of security. But Proverbs 22:1 reminds us that there is something far more valuable than anything we could ever accumulate: the kind of person we are becoming. A good name isn't about being popular, having an impressive reputation, or making sure everyone thinks highly of us. It's about character. It's about integrity. It's about living in such a way that our words and actions reflect the God we claim to follow. And character is often revealed in the smallest moments.
It's choosing honesty when dishonesty would be easier. It's keeping your word when following through becomes inconvenient. It's treating people with kindness when there's nothing to gain in return. It's doing what's right even when nobody is watching. The truth is, people may forget what we accomplished, what we owned, or how successful we appeared. But they often remember how we treated them. They remember whether we were trustworthy. Whether we showed up when it mattered. Whether our faith was something we simply talked about or something we actually lived. And here's something worth considering: A good name takes years to build, but it can be damaged in a moment.
That's why we can't afford to be careless with our character. Of course, none of us gets this right all the time. We make mistakes. We say things we regret. We fall short of the very standards we want to live by. Thankfully, God's grace doesn't just forgive our failures; it also transforms us as we surrender our lives to Him. And while we cannot control what everyone thinks or says about us, we can choose to walk faithfully before God. At the end of the day, the goal isn't to have everyone speak well of our name. The goal is to live in a way that honors His. Because the greatest legacy we can leave isn't found in a bank account, a title, or a list of achievements. It's a life that points people to Jesus.
So here's a question worth asking today: When people remember me, will they remember what I had, or will they remember how I lived? A good name isn't built by trying to impress people. It's built by faithfully honoring God.
Prayer
Lord, help me value character more than success and integrity more than recognition. Teach me to live faithfully in the little things, to keep my word, and to treat others with grace. When I fall short, humble me enough to make things right. Above all, may the way I live bring honor to Your name. In Jesus' name, amen.
