The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength
The Joy of the Lord Is Your Strength
“Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
— Nehemiah 8:10
There are seasons when strength feels hard to find.
You’re tired. Life hasn’t gone the way you expected. The prayers you’ve prayed haven’t been answered the way you hoped. You’ve carried responsibilities, disappointments, pressures, and burdens for longer than you thought you would.
And yet Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us of something powerful: Our strength doesn’t come from our circumstances. It comes from the Lord.
When Ezra read God’s Word to the people of Israel, they began to weep. They realized how far they had wandered from God. They were overwhelmed by what they heard.
But instead of telling them to remain in their sorrow, Nehemiah told them:
“Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Notice that he didn’t say, “Your situation will give you strength.”
He didn’t say, “Everything is going to work out exactly the way you want.”
He pointed them back to God.
Joy Is Deeper Than Happiness
Happiness often depends on what is happening around us.
Joy is rooted in who God is.
Happiness says, “Things are going well.”
Joy says, “Even when things aren’t going well, God is still good.”
Joy says:
God is still faithful.
God is still with me.
God is still working.
God is still providing.
God is still holding me.
God is still writing my story.
That means you can have tears in your eyes and still have joy in your heart.
You can be disappointed and still trust God.
You can be exhausted and still worship.
You can be walking through uncertainty and still know that you are not walking alone.
His Joy Becomes Your Strength
Maybe today you don’t feel strong.
That’s okay.
God never asked you to manufacture enough strength to carry everything yourself.
Sometimes strength looks like simply getting up and trusting God for one more day.
Sometimes strength is praying when you don’t know what else to do.
Sometimes strength is worshiping while your heart is hurting.
Sometimes strength is saying:
“Lord, I don’t understand what You’re doing, but I still trust You.”
Your strength is not found in having everything figured out.
Your strength is found in knowing the One who does.
So today, don’t let your circumstances determine your joy.
Look back at what God has already brought you through.
Remember His faithfulness.
Remember His promises.
Remember that the same God who carried you yesterday is already waiting for you in tomorrow.
The joy of the Lord is not the reward for finally getting through the battle.
It is the strength God gives you while you are still walking through it.
So keep going.
Not because you are strong enough.
But because He is.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that my strength does not depend on how I feel or what is happening around me. When I am tired, discouraged, or overwhelmed, remind me that my joy is found in You. Help me remember Your faithfulness and trust You even when I cannot see what You are doing. Fill my heart with a joy that circumstances cannot take away. Today, let Your joy become my strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
