Pressing On: Keeping Your Eye on the Prize

Pressing On: Keeping Your Eye on the Prize

Life has a way of throwing detours at us. What once looked like a straight road can quickly become winding and uphill. In those moments, it’s easy to lose sight of where we’re headed—to get so overwhelmed by the struggle that we forget the promise waiting at the end of the road. But one thing has become clear in my own journey: we are called not just to start the race, but to finish it with our eyes fixed on the prize.

The Apostle Paul said it best in Philippians 3:13–14:
“Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

There’s a reason Paul used running as a metaphor for the Christian life—it takes endurance, intentionality, and an unwavering focus. Runners don’t look back. They don’t get distracted by the noise in the stands or the pain in their legs. They keep moving, even when it hurts, because they know what they’re running toward.

The Prize is Worth It
The “prize” isn’t about status, success, or worldly comfort. It’s Jesus. It’s becoming more like Him. It’s living in a way that reflects His love, grace, and truth. It’s standing before God one day and hearing, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

When we keep our eyes on that prize, the trials don’t disappear, but they take on a new perspective. The hardship becomes part of the training. The pain becomes proof that we’re still in the race. And the delays? They become divine detours that build strength we didn’t know we needed.

Let Go of What Holds You Back
Sometimes, to press on, we have to lay things down—guilt from the past, the need for approval, fear of failure, or the weight of comparison. All of it can keep us stuck. But when we release what holds us back, we’re free to run with open hands and a focused heart.

Ask yourself: What’s keeping me from moving forward? What’s distracting me from the finish line? Then give that thing to God. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. He doesn’t expect us to run this race alone—He runs with us, ahead of us, and within us.

Don’t Quit Now
If you’re weary, you’re not alone. If you feel like giving up, don’t. You’re closer than you think. Keep praying, keep trusting, keep showing up. The breakthrough might not come in the way you expected, but it will come in the way you need. God wastes nothing—not even the parts that feel like setbacks.

So press on. Keep your eyes on Jesus. The race is hard, but the reward is eternal. And every step forward, no matter how small, is a step closer to the finish line.
