Moving Forward with a Broken Heart

Moving Forward with a Broken Heart

There are moments in life when your heart doesn’t just ache—it feels shattered. Not the kind of pain you can quickly pray away. Not the kind that disappears after a good night’s sleep. But the kind that lingers… the kind that changes you.Maybe it’s betrayal.Maybe it’s disappointment.Maybe it’s watching someone you love make choices that break your heart. And here’s the tension we all feel in those moments:How do you move forward… when your heart is still broken?

1. You Don’t Have to Be “Okay” to Move Forward

One of the biggest lies we believe is that healing has to be complete before we take a step. But Scripture shows us something different.David wrote psalms with tears still in his eyes.Jesus carried the weight of the cross while feeling the depth of sorrow.Moving forward doesn’t mean you’re over it.It means you’re trusting God in it.You can walk and weep at the same time.

2. God Is Near to the Brokenhearted

Psalm 34:18 reminds us:

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Notice what it doesn’t say.It doesn’t say God waits until you’re strong. It doesn’t say He shows up when you’ve pulled yourself together. He comes close right in the middle of the mess. When your heart is broken, God doesn’t back away—He leans in.

3. Forward Doesn’t Mean Fast

We live in a world that rushes everything—healing included. But God is not in a hurry with your heart. Some days moving forward looks like:

  • Getting out of bed when you don’t want to
  • Choosing not to respond in anger
  • Whispering a prayer instead of giving up
  • Showing up, even when it hurts

That counts. Small steps are still steps.

4. Don’t Let Pain Turn Into Bitterness

A broken heart can either soften you… or harden you.Hebrews warns us about a “root of bitterness” that can grow if we’re not careful. And if we’re honest, bitterness can feel justified. But here’s the truth:Bitterness keeps you tied to the pain.Forgiveness begins to set you free.Forgiveness doesn’t mean what happened was okay.It means you’re choosing to trust God with what you can’t fix.

5. God Still Has a Future for You

It may not feel like it right now—but your story isn’t over.Brokenness is not the end of your story. It’s often where God begins His deepest work. The same God who brings beauty from ashes is still writing something meaningful with your life.Even here.Even now.

6. Fix Your Eyes Forward—Not Backward

Pain has a way of pulling your focus into the past:

  • “What if I had…”
  • “Why did they…”
  • “I should have…”

But healing begins when we gently shift our eyes forward. Not because the past doesn’t matter, but because God is already in your future. Isaiah 43:18–19 says:

Forget the former things… See, I am doing a new thing!”

You may not see it yet.But God is already at work ahead of you.

Closing Thought

Moving forward with a broken heart is not about pretending you’re strong. It’s about knowing Who is holding you together when you’re not.So if that’s where you are right now…Take one step.Just one.God will meet you there.

A Simple Prayer

God, You see the pain I carry. You know what’s been broken in me.Help me to trust You one step at a time.Heal what I cannot fix.Guard my heart from bitterness. And lead me forward—even when it hurts. In Jesus’ name,Amen.
