More Grace Than Your Pride
James 4:6
“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’”
There are moments in life when you feel the weight of everything pressing in at once. Pressure. Pain. Conflict. Struggle. And if we’re honest, in those moments something starts to rise up in us… pride. Pride doesn’t always look loud. Sometimes it looks like control. Sometimes it looks like defensiveness. Sometimes it looks like, “I’ve got this. I don’t need help.” But Scripture cuts through all of that and tells us something we don’t naturally want to hear: God opposes the proud. Not ignores. Not overlooks. Opposes. That means pride doesn’t just affect your relationships—it puts you in resistance against God Himself. And the scary part is… pride feels strong in the moment. It feels justified. It feels right. But it quietly closes your hands to the very thing you need most. Because right before that warning comes a promise: “He gives more grace.” Not just grace for the easy days. Not just grace for when you’re doing well. More grace. Grace for when your heart is breaking. Grace for when your family feels like it’s falling apart. Grace for when you don’t have answers. Grace for when you’re tired of holding it all together. But here’s the tension: Grace flows toward humility. Not because God is withholding… but because humility is what opens the door. Pride says,“I’ll figure this out.”Humility says,“God, I need You.” Pride says,“I deserve better.” Humility says,“God, have mercy on me.” Pride stands tall. Humility falls to its knees. And the kingdom of God works in a way that flips everything we expect: The way up… is down. The way to strength is surrender. The way to grace is humility. And maybe the hardest part of this verse is realizing that sometimes the thing standing between us and the grace of God… is us. Our pride. Our need to be right. Our refusal to let go. But here’s the hope: God is not standing at a distance waiting for you to clean yourself up. He gives more grace. That means no matter how far you’ve gone in pride, you are one humble step away from grace. One honest prayer. One surrendered moment. Not perfect. Not polished. Just humble. So today, don’t fight to hold everything together. Lay it down. Because: Pride puts you against God… but humility places you under His grace. And there is no better place to be.
