I Can Do All Things Through Christ
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
Philippians 4:13 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. We put it on shirts, signs, and social media posts. We quote it before a big challenge and remind ourselves of it when we need courage. But Paul wasn’t writing these words from a place of comfort. He was writing from prison. And when you read the verses leading up to Philippians 4:13, you discover something powerful.
Paul says:“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” — Philippians 4:11 Paul had experienced abundance, and he had experienced need. He knew what it was like to have plenty, and he knew what it was like to go without. Then he says: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” In other words: “Whatever season I find myself in, Christ will give me the strength to walk through it.”
It Doesn’t Mean Everything Will Be Easy
Sometimes we treat Philippians 4:13 like a promise that if we believe hard enough, we can accomplish anything we want. But Paul’s point wasn’t, “Jesus will help me achieve every dream.” His point was, “Jesus will give me the strength I need for whatever comes.” There will be seasons when prayers aren’t answered the way we expected. There will be days when the money feels tight. There will be relationships that hurt. There will be diagnoses we didn’t want to hear. There will be doors that close. There will be moments when we simply don’t know what comes next. Philippians 4:13 doesn’t promise that we’ll avoid those moments. It promises that we don’t have to face them in our own strength.
Strength for This Season
Maybe you’ve been thinking: “I don’t know if I can do this.” And perhaps the answer is: You can’t—not by yourself. But that’s the beauty of this verse. God never asked you to manufacture enough strength to carry everything you’re facing. He invites you to depend on His. When you’re tired, Christ strengthens you. When you’re afraid, Christ strengthens you. When you’re disappointed, Christ strengthens you. When you don’t know what tomorrow holds, Christ strengthens you. When you have to take another step even though you’d rather sit down and quit, Christ strengthens you.
Enough Strength for Today
Sometimes we want God to give us strength for the next six months. But often He gives us strength for today. Strength for the next conversation. Strength for the next appointment. Strength for the next decision. Strength to get out of bed. Strength to pray again. Strength to trust again. Strength to take one more step. You don’t have to know how you’re going to make it through everything that’s ahead. You just need to know Who is walking with you.
Christ Is Your Strength
Philippians 4:13 isn’t really a declaration of how strong we are. It’s a declaration of how strong Christ is.
My circumstances may change, but Christ doesn’t. My strength may run out, but His doesn’t. My resources may become limited, but His grace never does.
So whatever you’re carrying today, remind yourself: I don’t have to be strong enough for everything. I just have to stay close to the One who is. “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Not because every situation will turn out the way I hoped. Not because every road will be easy. Not because I have everything figured out. But because whatever this season requires of me, Jesus will give me the strength to walk through it.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that I don’t have to face today in my own strength. When I feel tired, overwhelmed, afraid, or uncertain, remind me that You are with me. Give me strength for the step in front of me. Teach me to be content in every season and to depend on You whether I have plenty or little. Whatever today brings, help me confidently say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Amen.
