Lord, I Believe… But Help My Unbelief

“Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, ‘Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!’” — Mark 9:24

This may be one of the most honest prayers in all of Scripture. A desperate father brings his suffering son to Jesus. He has exhausted every option. He has heard stories about Jesus, seen hope in Him, and yet, after so much disappointment, his faith is mixed with questions. When Jesus tells him, “All things are possible for one who believes,” the father doesn’t pretend to have perfect faith. He doesn’t fake confidence. He doesn’t hide his doubts. Instead, he cries,“Lord, I believe… but help my unbelief.”

What a beautiful reminder that Jesus is not looking for flawless faith. He is looking for honest faith. Many of us know exactly what this father felt. We believe God is good… but sometimes we wonder why He hasn’t answered yet. We believe God heals… but we still watch people we love suffer. We believe God provides… but the bills keep piling up. We believe God has a plan… but life isn’t unfolding the way we expected. Faith and struggle often exist in the same heart. That doesn’t make you a hypocrite. It makes you human.

The encouraging part of the story is that Jesus didn’t rebuke the father for his imperfect faith. He responded to it. He met him in the middle of his weakness and demonstrated His power. Sometimes we think we need mountain-sized faith for God to work. Yet throughout Scripture, God repeatedly works through people who felt weak, uncertain, and afraid. Faith isn’t the absence of questions. Faith is bringing your questions to Jesus. It’s saying, “Lord, I trust You—even when I don’t understand.” It’s continuing to obey when your emotions haven’t caught up. It’s choosing to believe God’s character when your circumstances seem to say otherwise.

If you’re struggling today, don’t be afraid to pray this father’s prayer.“Lord, I believe… but help my unbelief.” Ask God to strengthen your faith. Ask Him to remind you of His faithfulness. Ask Him to help you trust Him with what you cannot see. He welcomes that prayer because He specializes in meeting people whose faith feels small. The strength of your faith has never been as important as the strength of the One your faith is placed in.

Prayer

Father, You know the places where my faith is strong and the places where fear still lingers. Thank You that I don’t have to pretend before You. Help my unbelief. Strengthen my trust in Your promises. Teach me to walk by faith and not by sight, knowing that You are always faithful, even when I cannot yet see what You are doing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
