He Is Near to the Brokenhearted
There are moments in life when something breaks inside you. Not physically. Not visibly. But deeply… quietly… personally. It’s the kind of pain you can carry into a room full of people and no one even notices. The kind that lingers in your thoughts, interrupts your sleep, and shows up in the silence. A conversation that didn’t go the way you hoped. A relationship that changed. A prayer that feels like it hasn’t been answered. A season that’s heavier than you expected. And in those moments, one question tends to rise to the surface: “Where is God in this?” The answer isn’t always what we expect… but it is exactly what we need. “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (ESV) Not distant. Not distracted. Not waiting for you to “get it together.” Near. God doesn’t avoid brokenness—He moves toward it.
God Doesn’t Require Strength to Be Close
We often think we have to come to God cleaned up, put together, and strong. But Psalm 34:18 tells a different story. God draws close to the brokenhearted. He saves those who are crushed in spirit. That means your lowest moment isn’t a barrier to God’s presence… it’s actually an invitation to experience it. You don’t have to hide the pain. You don’t have to pretend you’re okay. You don’t have to carry it alone. God isn’t waiting for a better version of you. He meets you right where you are.
Broken Doesn’t Mean Abandoned
Sometimes brokenness can trick us into believing we’ve been left behind. That somehow God has stepped back. That maybe we’ve done something wrong. That maybe we’re on our own in this season. But Scripture reminds us: God is closest when you feel it the least. Feelings can lie. Circumstances can confuse. But truth remains steady. If your heart feels shattered… If your spirit feels crushed…God is not far from you—He is right there with you.
God Doesn’t Waste Your Pain
Here’s what’s hard to see in the middle of it: God is working… even in the breaking. Not causing harm. Not ignoring your pain. But redeeming what feels unbearable.
Brokenness has a way of:
- Stripping away what doesn’t last
- Revealing what truly matters
- Drawing us closer to the heart of God
The very place you wish you could escape might be the place God is meeting you most deeply.
He Is Close Enough to Carry You
Psalm 34:18 doesn’t just say God is near—it says He saves. That means He steps in. He lifts. He restores. He carries what you cannot. You may not feel strong right now. You may not have the answers. You may not even know how to pray. That’s okay. Because your strength isn’t the requirement for His presence. Your need is.
A Final Reminder
If your heart is heavy today… If something in you feels cracked, worn down, or overwhelmed…Hold onto this truth: God is not watching from a distance. He is near. Closer than your thoughts. Closer than your fear. Closer than the pain itself. And He is not just near to observe— He is near to restore.
A Prayer
Lord, You see the places in my heart that feel broken. The weight I’ve been carrying… the pain I don’t always have words for. Thank You for not turning away from me in this. Thank You for drawing near. Help me to trust that even here… You are present. Even here… You are working. Even here… You are holding me together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
