Grief as an expression of love

Grief as an expression of love

Grief Is Not Weakness

“Grief is not weakness. It is love with nowhere to go.” Grief is one of the deepest expressions of love. We don’t grieve because we are weak—we grieve because someone or something we treasured is no longer in the place it once was. The greater the love, the deeper the grief.

Sometimes we feel pressure to move on quickly, hide our tears, or act as though our faith should erase our sorrow. But Scripture paints a different picture. When Jesus stood at the tomb of Lazarus, He knew exactly what He was about to do. He knew resurrection was only moments away. Yet before He called Lazarus out of the grave, Jesus wept (John 11:35). He didn’t rush past the pain. He entered into it. Those tears remind us that grief and faith are not enemies. You can trust God completely and still have tears running down your face. You can believe in His promises while your heart aches. Grief is not a sign that your faith is failing; it is often a sign that your love was real.

The beautiful invitation of the gospel is that we do not have to carry our grief alone. God never asks us to pretend it doesn’t exist. He invites us to bring every tear, every question, every empty place, and every broken piece of our heart to Him. Giving your grief to God is not the end of the story. It is often the beginning of the next chapter. God has a way of meeting us in our sorrow and doing His deepest work there. He comforts us, strengthens us, and slowly begins to restore hope where despair once lived. The pain may not disappear overnight, but His presence never leaves us. Over time, what once felt unbearable becomes a testimony of His sustaining grace.

If today your heart is heavy, don’t be ashamed of your tears. Bring them to Jesus. The Savior who wept with grieving friends is the same Savior who walks with you today. And just as the story at Lazarus’ tomb did not end in death, your story doesn’t have to end in grief either.

There is hope beyond the tears, because our God is still writing the next chapter.“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
