God Can Restore the Years

“So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten…” — Joel 2:25 NKJV

There are some things we lose that we can replace. Money can be earned again. Possessions can be replaced. Plans can be changed. But time feels different. You can’t go back and relive last year. You can’t rewind a season and make different decisions. You can’t recover the years spent hurting, wandering, waiting, grieving, or wondering what God was doing. And sometimes that leaves us thinking: “I’ve lost too much time.” But then God says something incredible in Joel 2: “I will restore to you the years…” Not just the crops. Not just the possessions. The years.

Israel had experienced devastation. Locusts had swept through the land and consumed what had taken months to grow. The damage was real. The loss was real. But the loss wasn’t going to have the final word. God was calling His people back to Himself, and He promised that restoration would follow. That doesn’t necessarily mean God gives us a time machine and makes everything exactly the way it used to be. Sometimes restoration looks even greater than simply getting something back. God can redeem what happened. He can take the season you thought was wasted and use it to develop wisdom. He can take the pain you wish you never experienced and use it to deepen your compassion. He can take the failure you regret and turn it into a testimony of His grace. He can take years of wandering and use them to give you a greater appreciation for being home. He can take what looked empty and make it fruitful again.

You Are Not Too Late

Maybe you look back and think about the opportunities you missed. The decisions you wish you could change. The relationships that were damaged. The years you spent running from God. The season that was taken from you through circumstances completely outside your control. And you wonder: “Can God still do something with what’s left?” Absolutely. God is not limited by your timeline. Moses was 80 when God called him to lead Israel out of Egypt. Joseph spent years in slavery and prison before suddenly stepping into the purpose God had prepared for him. Peter failed Jesus publicly, yet Jesus restored him and continued to use his life powerfully. Over and over Scripture reminds us: God specializes in redemption.

The Locust Doesn’t Get the Last Word

The enemy would love for you to spend the rest of your life staring at what was eaten. God wants you to look at what He is growing next. Maybe you cannot recover every opportunity. Maybe every relationship won’t be restored exactly as it was. Maybe some consequences remain. But none of that means God is finished. Your story is still in His hands.

The years behind you may contain pain, mistakes, disappointment, and loss. But the years ahead of you still belong to God. So don’t spend today grieving yesterday so deeply that you miss what God is doing right now. Return to Him. Trust Him. Keep walking. Keep planting. Keep believing. Because the same God who said, “I will restore to you the years…” is still a God of restoration today.

Prayer

Lord, thank You that nothing in my life is beyond Your ability to redeem. There are seasons I wish I could change and years I wish I could get back, but I choose to place them in Your hands. Restore what has been broken. Redeem what has been lost. Use even the painful chapters of my story for Your glory. Help me stop living in regret over yesterday and begin trusting You with tomorrow. I believe You are still writing my story, and I believe the best thing I can do with the years ahead is surrender them completely to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.The locust may have eaten the harvest, but it doesn’t get to write the ending. God does.
