“God is Love.”
When we think about the nature of God, it’s easy to default to words like holy, powerful, eternal, or just. And rightly so—He is all those things. But if there is one word that holds them all together, it is this: love.
“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” — 1 John 4:8 (ESV)
Love Isn’t Just What God Does — It’s Who He Is
Scripture doesn’t just say that God shows love or acts in love—it says that God is love. His very nature is love. Every action He takes flows from this truth. Creation itself was an act of love. Redemption through Jesus was love incarnate. His patience, His discipline, His mercy—all expressions of perfect love. This isn’t the kind of shallow, temporary love we see in the world. God’s love is steadfast, sacrificial, and eternal. It is the kind of love that pursues us when we’re at our worst, that doesn’t flinch at our failures, and that paid the ultimate price to bring us home.
“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”— Romans 5:8
Love That Transforms
God’s love doesn’t just comfort us—it changes us. When we encounter His love, we are never the same. His love casts out fear (1 John 4:18). His love calls us sons and daughters (John 1:12). His love teaches us how to love others (John 13:34).When we truly believe that God is love, it changes how we respond to trials. It changes how we treat people. It changes how we see ourselves. We stop striving to earn God’s affection and start living from it. And that’s where freedom begins.
Called to Love Like Him
If we’ve received this love, we are called to reflect it.
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” — 1 John 4:11
In a world full of division, fear, and loneliness, we are invited to be ambassadors of God’s love. Not just with our words, but with our lives. Not with perfection, but with humility and sincerity.Let’s ask ourselves: How am I showing the love of God to others? Am I receiving His love daily or just trying to survive on my own strength?
Closing Prayer:
Father, thank You that You are love. Not just in theory, but in action. Thank You for showing Your love through Jesus, and for pursuing us even when we fall short. Teach us to rest in Your love, and to reflect it boldly to the world around us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
