God Is for Us
If God Is for Us
“What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us?” — Romans 8:31 (NLT)
There are seasons when it feels like everything is against you. The circumstances are against you. The numbers are against you. People may be against you. Your own thoughts can even turn against you. And in those moments, it’s easy to begin measuring God’s faithfulness by how life feels. But Paul asks a question that changes our perspective: “If God is for us, who can ever be against us?”Notice, Paul doesn’t say that nothing will ever come against us. Things will. People will disappoint us. Doors will close. Plans will fall apart. Prayers won’t always be answered the way we hoped. There will be battles we never expected to fight. But the promise of Romans 8:31 isn’t that you won’t face opposition. The promise is that your opposition will never be greater than the God who is for you.
That changes everything. God being “for you” doesn’t mean He approves of everything you do or promises to make every circumstance easy. It means that because you belong to Christ, God is working for your ultimate good and His glory. Just a few verses earlier Paul writes: “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God…” — Romans 8:28 (NLT) Even the things you wouldn’t have chosen. Even the season you wish would end. Even the disappointment you still don’t understand. God is still working. And if you ever question whether God is truly for you, look at the cross. Romans 8:32 continues: “Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all…” The cross is the ultimate evidence that God is for us.
When your circumstances make you question His goodness, remember what He has already done. He gave you Jesus. So whatever you’re facing today, you don’t have to pretend it isn’t difficult. You don’t have to deny the battle. You simply have to remember who stands with you in it. The diagnosis may be against you. The bank account may look against you. The relationship may feel against you. The situation may seem impossible. But God is for you. And if the God who created heaven and earth, defeated sin and death, and raised Jesus from the grave is for you…what could possibly have the final word against you?
Prayer
Lord, when life feels like it is against me, remind me that You are for me. Help me stop measuring Your faithfulness by my circumstances and start measuring my circumstances by Your faithfulness. When I’m afraid, discouraged, or uncertain, turn my eyes back to Jesus and the cross. Whatever I face today, help me walk confidently knowing that I do not face it alone. You are with me, You are working, and You are for me. Amen.
