Giving your burdens to God
You were never meant to carry everything on your own.
SCRIPTURE “Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.” — Psalm 55:22 (NLT)
Have you ever had so much on your mind that even when you’re resting, you don’t feel rested? You lie down at night, but your thoughts keep going. You’re thinking about the bills that need to be paid, the decisions that need to be made, the people you’re concerned about, and the things that are completely outside your control. And no matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to turn it all off. I’ve been there. More times than I’d like to admit. Sometimes I find myself carrying things that I’ve already prayed about. I’ve brought them before the Lord, asked Him for help, and told Him I trust Him. But somewhere along the way, I pick those burdens right back up and start trying to figure everything out myself. It’s exhausting.
I think one of the hardest parts of trusting God is accepting that I don’t have to have everything figured out. Psalm 55:22 doesn’t tell us to get our lives together before coming to God. It doesn’t say to carry what we can and give Him whatever is left over. It simply says, “Give your burdens to the LORD.” Not some of them. All of them. The things we can explain and the things we can’t. The problems we created and the circumstances we never saw coming. The concerns we share with others and the ones we keep to ourselves. But here’s something I’ve had to learn: giving something to God doesn’t necessarily mean the situation changes overnight. The bill may still be due. The relationship may still be strained. The answer may still be unclear. Tomorrow may still have its challenges.
What changes is who we’re trusting to carry us through it. David doesn’t promise that we’ll never experience difficulties. He reminds us that God will sustain us in the middle of them. Maybe today you’re carrying something that’s been weighing on you for a long time. You’ve prayed about it, worried about it, lost sleep over it, and tried everything you know to do. Can I encourage you? You don’t have to figure everything out today. Do what you can. Be faithful with what’s in front of you. Take the next step God has given you. And trust Him with what you cannot control. Because the same God who invites you to give Him your burdens is the One who promises to take care of you. And He is more than capable of carrying what has been weighing you down.
TODAY’S REMINDER You can put down what you’ve been carrying. God hasn’t asked you to carry it alone.
PRAYER Lord, You know the things weighing on my heart today. You know the worries I haven’t shared, the questions I can’t answer, and the situations I can’t control. Forgive me for trying to carry everything on my own. Help me surrender these burdens to You and trust that You will sustain me, even when nothing seems to be changing. Teach me to rest in Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
