Finding Strength in God's Presence During Hard Times
When the Waters Rise God never promised a life without storms, but He promised we would never face them alone.
Isaiah 43:2 (NLT) “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”
There are seasons in life when it feels like everything is happening at once. You barely catch your breath from one difficult situation before another one comes along. The bills keep coming. The problems don't seem to stop. The prayers you've been praying still haven't been answered. And just when you think things might finally settle down, something else happens. I've been there. In fact, there are days when I feel like I'm still there.
I've had moments when I've looked at everything happening around me and wondered how much more I could handle. Not because I've stopped trusting God, but because sometimes life is just exhausting. And that's what I appreciate about Isaiah 43:2. God doesn't pretend the waters won't get deep. He doesn't tell us we won't face difficulty, experience pain, or walk through situations that feel overwhelming. Instead, He makes us a promise. "I will be with you."
Notice what God doesn't say.He doesn't say He'll keep us from every river. He doesn't promise we'll never feel the heat of the fire. He doesn't guarantee that following Him will somehow make life easier. But He does promise His presence in the middle of it all. And sometimes, that's the reminder we need most. Because when we're going through something difficult, our first instinct is usually to ask God to get us out of it. Lord, fix this. Lord, change this.Lord, make this stop. And there's nothing wrong with those prayers. I've prayed every one of them. But I'm learning that God's faithfulness isn't measured by how quickly He removes the difficulty. Sometimes His faithfulness is revealed in how He sustains us while we're still walking through it.
Think about that for a moment. There are things you've already survived that you once thought would completely overwhelm you. There were days you didn't know how you would make it through. Nights when sleep was difficult because your mind wouldn't stop racing. Situations where you couldn't see a way forward.Yet here you are. Maybe things aren't completely resolved. Maybe you're still carrying some of the same burdens. Maybe life looks nothing like you expected it to. But God has brought you this far. And the same God who sustained you yesterday hasn't abandoned you today.
One little word in this verse stands out to me: through."When you go through deep waters..." Not when you stay in them forever. Not when you surrender to them. But when you go through them. That doesn't mean every situation will resolve the way we want or on the timeline we've imagined. It means the waters don't get the final say over our lives. God does.So if you're in a season where the waters are rising, I want to encourage you with something I'm reminding myself of today. You don't have to figure everything out right now. You don't have to know how every problem will be solved. You don't even have to pretend you're doing better than you really are. Just keep trusting the One who promised to be with you.
Because God's presence doesn't always change what we're going through, but it changes how we go through it. And even when the waters are deep, you're not walking through them alone.
A final thought:Maybe today isn't about asking God to show you how everything will work out. Maybe it's simply about remembering that whatever lies ahead, He has promised to walk through it with you.The waters may rise, but God's faithfulness remains.
Prayer: Lord, You know the things I'm facing and the burdens I'm carrying. Some days I feel overwhelmed, and I don't know what to do next. Help me remember that Your presence isn't dependent on my circumstances. Give me the strength to keep moving forward, the peace to trust You with what I cannot control, and the faith to believe that You are with me every step of the way. In Jesus' name, amen.
