Finding Strength in God's Grace
WHEN WEAKNESS MAKES ROOM FOR GRACE
“Each time he said, ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’ So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NLT)
I don’t know about you, but I like having answers. I like knowing what comes next and believing I can handle whatever life throws my way. But I’ve had evenings when I’ve sat quietly, completely exhausted, wondering how I was going to do it all again tomorrow. Not just physically tired, but emotionally and spiritually drained. The kind of tired a good night’s sleep doesn’t fix. I’ve prayed about situations that seemed to go on forever. I’ve asked God to open doors, change circumstances, and give me clarity. And I’ve wondered why, after so much prayer, nothing seemed to be changing. It’s difficult to trust God while privately worrying about how everything will work out. You can encourage someone else to have faith in the morning and struggle with your own faith that same evening.
I’ve learned that knowing God’s promises and actually resting in them are two very different things. That’s why Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians 12:9 speak to me. Paul pleaded with God three times to remove what he called a thorn in his flesh. He wanted relief. But God didn’t remove the thorn. Instead, He told Paul that His grace was sufficient and His power was made perfect in weakness. I think about how often I’ve asked God to fix something when He was teaching me to depend on Him through it. There have been times when the answer didn’t come, the situation didn’t improve, and I still had to get up the next morning and face what was in front of me. And somehow, I did. Not because I’d figured everything out, but because God gave me enough grace for that day.
Looking back, some of my most meaningful moments with God haven’t happened when life was going smoothly. They’ve happened when my prayers were simple and all I could say was, “Lord, I need You. I don’t know how to do this without You.” Maybe that’s what Paul understood. God doesn’t always change our circumstances, but He can change how we walk through them. I’m still learning that. I still catch myself trying to control outcomes, worrying about things I can’t change, and carrying responsibilities as though everything depends on me. But I’m learning to surrender what I can’t control and trust God with what I can’t see. That includes the conversation I’m dreading, the responsibility that feels overwhelming, and the prayer that hasn’t been answered.
Maybe you’re in that kind of season right now. Maybe you’re showing up for everyone else while quietly wondering who’s going to hold you up. Maybe you’ve been praying about the same situation for months, and you’re tired of waiting. Here’s what I want us both to remember: God’s strength doesn’t begin where our weakness ends. His strength meets us right in the middle of it.
We don’t have to pretend everything is fine or wait until life gets easier to experience His faithfulness. His grace is sufficient for today. For the next conversation. The next responsibility. The next step of faith. And when tomorrow comes, we can trust Him for that day too. Maybe the greatest evidence of God’s strength isn’t that our circumstances change, but that His grace continues to carry us even when they don’t.
Lord, teach me to depend on Your strength instead of constantly relying on my own. Help me surrender what I cannot control and trust You when answers don’t come. Remind me that Your grace is enough for whatever today holds. Amen.
