Finding Joy in God's Presence
Psalm 16:11“You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.” — Psalm 16:11 (NLT)
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to let your circumstances determine your joy? When things are going well, when prayers are being answered, when life feels somewhat manageable, joy seems to come naturally. But when things get difficult, when the answers don’t come, or when life takes an unexpected turn, that joy can disappear just as quickly. I’ve learned that it’s possible to have everything going right around you and still feel empty inside. And it’s also possible to have everything going wrong and experience a peace and joy that doesn’t make sense.
The difference isn’t always what’s happening around us. Sometimes it’s where we’re looking for our joy. David understood something important when he wrote Psalm 16:11. He didn’t say that joy comes from having everything figured out. He didn’t say it comes from getting everything we want or living a life without problems. He said joy is found in God’s presence. I love that. Because circumstances change. People change. Plans fall apart. Seasons come and go. But God’s presence remains. And maybe that’s something we need to be reminded of today. We spend so much time asking God to change what’s happening around us that sometimes we forget to simply enjoy being with Him. We want answers. We want direction. We want relief. And there’s nothing wrong with asking for those things. But what if the greatest gift God wants to give us in the middle of it all isn’t a change in circumstances, but a deeper awareness of His presence?
Notice that David begins by saying, “You will show me the way of life.” God doesn’t promise to show us the entire journey. Sometimes He simply shows us the next step. And as we walk with Him, we discover that His presence is more than enough for whatever lies ahead. That doesn’t mean we won’t experience sadness, disappointment, or uncertainty. Biblical joy isn’t pretending everything is okay when it isn’t. Joy is knowing that even when everything isn’t okay, God is still with us.
Maybe today you’re waiting for something to change. Maybe you’re carrying a burden that feels heavier than you expected. Or maybe life is good, but somewhere along the way you’ve become so busy doing things for God that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to simply be with Him. Whatever season you’re in, don’t miss what David is reminding us. The greatest joy in life isn’t found in what God gives us. It’s found in God Himself. And the beautiful thing about His presence is that we don’t have to wait until life gets better to experience it. We can draw near to Him right here, right now. Because the fullness of joy isn’t found in a perfect life. It’s found in the presence of a perfect Savior.
Something to Think About
Have I been looking for joy in changed circumstances, answered prayers, or things going my way instead of finding it in God’s presence?
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve looked everywhere else for the joy that can only be found in You. Help me stop allowing my circumstances to determine my peace. Teach me to slow down, draw near, and enjoy Your presence. Even when life doesn’t make sense, remind me that You are with me, and that You are enough. In Jesus’ name, amen.
