Draw Near
DRAW NEAR You don't have to have it all together to come close to God.
SCRIPTURE “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8 (NKJV)
Have you ever felt distant from God? Not because you stopped believing in Him. Not because you don't love Him. But somewhere between the responsibilities, the disappointments, the unanswered prayers, and the busyness of everyday life, you realize you haven't been spending much time with Him. And the distance didn't happen overnight. It happened little by little. One missed morning in the Word. One prayer you meant to pray but never got around to. One difficult season where you became so focused on what was happening around you that you forgot to spend time with the One who could carry you through it. And before you know it, you feel disconnected. Here's something I've been learning… Just because God feels distant doesn't mean He's moved.
Sometimes we're waiting for God to do something extraordinary to remind us He's near, when He's simply inviting us to come close. I love the simplicity of James 4:8."Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." Notice what it doesn't say. It doesn't say, "Get your life together first." It doesn't say, "Figure everything out."It doesn't say, "Come back when your faith is stronger, your prayers are better, and your circumstances make sense." It simply says, "Draw near."
What an incredible invitation! But there's something important about the context of this verse. James isn't just talking about feeling spiritually disconnected. He's calling believers to turn away from divided loyalties, humble themselves, repent, and return to God wholeheartedly. Because sometimes the distance we feel isn't simply the result of a busy schedule. Sometimes we've allowed other things to take the place that belongs to Him.Our worries. Our ambitions. Our distractions. Our need to control everything. And if we're not careful, we can become so consumed with managing our lives that we forget to surrender them. I think about how easy it is to seek God for what we need rather than simply seeking Him for who He is.We want answers. We want direction. We want provision. We want the circumstances to change. And there's nothing wrong with bringing those things to the Lord.
But what happens when the answer doesn't come? What happens when the circumstances stay the same? Will we still draw near? Because the greatest gift of drawing near to God isn't necessarily receiving what we've been asking for. It's experiencing more of Him. His presence doesn't always remove the difficulty, but it changes how we walk through it. His peace can steady us when everything around us feels uncertain. His Word can remind us of what's true when our emotions are telling us something different. And His faithfulness remains, even in seasons when we struggle to recognize it.
Here's what encourages me…God isn't asking us to manufacture some extraordinary spiritual experience every time we come to Him. Sometimes drawing near looks like opening your Bible when you don't feel like it. Sometimes it's turning off the noise and sitting quietly in His presence. Sometimes it's an honest prayer that sounds more like, "Lord, I'm tired. I'm struggling. And I don't even know what to say." Sometimes it's acknowledging that you've been trying to do everything on your own and finally surrendering control. And sometimes it's simply choosing obedience when your feelings haven't caught up with your faith. Drawing near isn't about checking another box on our spiritual to-do list. It's about a relationship. Think about the people you're closest to. Those relationships don't grow simply because you acknowledge that the other person exists. They grow through time, conversation, honesty, trust, and intentionality.
Our relationship with the Lord requires intentionality, too. And here's the beautiful part…God is not reluctant to receive the person who humbly returns to Him. You may have wandered. You may have become distracted. You may have allowed things into your life that have pulled your heart in the wrong direction. But His invitation still stands. Draw near. Not because you've earned your way back into His presence, but because His grace makes returning possible. Maybe today you don't need another plan, another strategy, or another answer. Maybe what you need most is to get back to the place where your heart is quiet enough to hear Him. To stop running ahead. To stop trying to figure everything out. To stop allowing everything else to compete for the attention and affection that belong to Him. And simply come close.
Because the truth is, we can spend so much time asking God to change what's happening around us that we neglect to let Him change what's happening within us. And sometimes that's where the greatest work needs to happen. So wherever you find yourself today, remember this:You don't have to wait until tomorrow. You don't have to wait until life slows down. You don't have to wait until you feel more spiritual. You can draw near to Him right now.
The invitation is simple. The response is ours. Draw near to God. And trust His promise that He will draw near to you.
SIT WITH THIS
1. What has been competing for your attention and affection lately, and how might those things be creating distance in your relationship with God?
2. If God didn't change a single circumstance you're facing right now, would being closer to Him still be enough for you? Why or why not?
PRAYER
Lord, forgive me for the times I've allowed the distractions, worries, and demands of life to pull my attention away from You. Help me recognize the things that have taken priority over my relationship with You. Teach me to seek You not just for what You can do, but because of who You are. Give me a heart that longs for Your presence, a spirit willing to surrender, and the desire to draw near to You every day. In Jesus' name, Amen.
