Don’t Let Your Heart Drift

“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day… that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
— Hebrews 3:12–13

Most people don’t walk away from God overnight.

They drift.

A little compromise here.
A little distance there.
Prayer becomes less frequent.
God’s Word becomes less important.
Worship becomes optional.
Conviction gets easier to ignore.

And before we realize it, our hearts have moved farther from God than we ever intended.

That’s why Hebrews gives us this warning:

“Take care…”

In other words, pay attention to your heart.

A Hard Heart Usually Happens Slowly

Hebrews warns us about being “hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”

Sin is deceptive because it rarely announces where it is taking us.

It says: “It’s not that serious.” “Everyone does it.” “You can deal with it later. “You’re fine.”

But every time we continually resist God’s voice, our hearts can become a little less sensitive to Him.

What once bothered us doesn’t bother us anymore.

What once convicted us becomes something we justify.

What once caused us to run to God becomes something we hide from Him.

Be careful when you become comfortable with what once convicted you.

We Need Each Other

But Hebrews doesn’t just tell us to watch our own hearts.

It says: “Exhort one another every day.”

God never intended Christianity to be lived alone.

We need people who will encourage us when we’re tired.

People who will pray when we’re struggling.

People who will tell us the truth when we’re drifting.

People who will remind us of God’s faithfulness when we’re tempted to give up.

Sometimes God strengthens your faith through someone else’s voice.

That’s one reason the church matters.

Isolation makes drifting easier. Community helps keep our hearts anchored.

Hold On

Verse 14 says:

“For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.”

There is something powerful about those last words:

Firm to the end.

Following Jesus isn’t just about starting well. It’s about continuing.

Keep believing. Keep praying. Keep gathering. Keep worshiping. Keep opening His Word. Keep allowing people to speak into your life. Keep turning away from sin. Keep coming back to Jesus.

There will be seasons when your faith feels strong and seasons when you feel like you’re barely hanging on.

But don’t confuse a difficult season with permission to drift.

Stay close to Jesus.

Pay attention to your heart.

And surround yourself with people who will keep pointing you back to Him.

Because the goal isn’t simply to have once followed Jesus.

The goal is to walk with Him all the way home.

Prayer

Lord, guard my heart from drifting away from You. Show me the places where I have become comfortable, distracted, or spiritually numb. Give me a heart that remains sensitive to Your voice. Surround me with people who will encourage me, challenge me, and point me toward You—and help me do the same for others. Give me the grace to hold firmly to Jesus through every season and remain faithful to the end.

Keep my heart soft, my faith strong, and my life close to You. Amen.
