Don’t Just Believe Different—Live Different
Romans 12 There comes a point in our walk with Jesus when what we believe has to change how we live. Romans 12 is that turning point.For the first eleven chapters of Romans, Paul lays out the incredible mercy and grace of God—the reality of our sin, salvation through Jesus, justification by faith, and the overwhelming love of God. Then chapter 12 begins with one word: Therefore. In other words, because of everything God has done for you… this is how you should live. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” — Romans 12:1 NKJV God isn’t simply asking for a part of our lives. He wants all of us.
A Living Sacrifice
In the Old Testament, sacrifices were brought to the altar and offered to God. But Paul says that now we are the sacrifice. Not a dead sacrifice—a living sacrifice. That means every morning we climb back onto the altar. “Lord, my plans are Yours.” “My time is Yours.” “My family is Yours.” “My finances are Yours.” “My gifts are Yours.” “My future is Yours.” “My life belongs to You.”Following Jesus isn’t simply adding Him to our lives. It is surrendering our lives to Him.
Don’t Let the World Squeeze You Into Its Mold
Paul continues:“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” — Romans 12:2 NKJV
The world is constantly discipling us. Every day we are being told what success looks like, what we should desire, what should make us happy, what we should fear, and what we should pursue. Paul says, Don’t conform. Be transformed. And transformation begins in the mind. We cannot continually fill our minds with the thinking of the world and expect to live according to the ways of Jesus. God transforms our lives as His Word transforms our thinking. Sometimes the biggest change God wants to make isn’t around us. It’s within us.
You Have a Part to Play
Romans 12 then moves from surrender to service. Paul explains that the church is like a body. We are many members, but we belong to one another. And every member has a purpose. Some teach. Some encourage. Some give. Some lead. Some serve. Some show mercy. The point isn’t that everyone does the same thing. The point is that everyone does something. God has given you gifts—not simply for your benefit, but so you can use them to strengthen someone else. The church works best when every part of the body realizes: I have a role to play.
What Does a Surrendered Life Look Like?
The rest of Romans 12 gets incredibly practical. Love genuinely. Hate what is evil. Hold tightly to what is good. Honor others. Serve the Lord passionately. Rejoice in hope. Be patient in trouble. Keep praying. Help people in need. Practice hospitality. Bless people who mistreat you. Celebrate with those who celebrate. Cry with those who cry. Live humbly. Don’t repay evil for evil. Pursue peace. And then Paul ends with this powerful challenge: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21 NKJV
That’s what a transformed life looks like. It doesn’t simply know more Scripture. It starts looking more like Jesus.
The Altar Is Still Calling
Romans 12 challenges us to ask a difficult question: Has Jesus changed only what I believe—or has He changed how I live? Because Christianity isn’t simply something we agree with. It is a life surrendered to Jesus. Maybe today the prayer isn’t complicated. “Lord, here I am. All of me. My thoughts, plans, gifts, relationships, resources, and future. I place them back on the altar. Transform my mind, change my heart, and let my life look more like Jesus.” The world doesn’t need more people who simply say they believe in Jesus. It needs to see people whose lives have been transformed by Him. Don’t just believe different. Live different.
