A New Identity in Jesus
A New Identity in Jesus
There are many voices in this world trying to tell us who we are.
Some identities are built around success. Others are built around failure. Some people define themselves by their past, their pain, their family history, or the opinions of others. But when we come to Jesus, something remarkable happens.
We receive a new identity.
Not a slightly improved version of our old self. Not a cleaned-up version of who we used to be. God gives us something entirely new.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
You Are No Longer Defined by Your Past
Perhaps you’ve made mistakes you wish you could erase. Maybe you carry regrets, shame, or memories that still haunt you. Jesus doesn’t deny your past, but He refuses to let it define your future.
Through the cross, your sins are forgiven, your guilt is removed, and your record is wiped clean.
You are not who you were. You are who Christ says you are.
You Are a Child of God
“But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
— John 1:12
You are not an orphan trying to earn God’s approval. You are His beloved child. You don’t have to strive for acceptance—you already have it through Christ. You don’t serve God to become His child; you serve Him because you already are His child.
You Are Chosen
“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession.”
— 1 Peter 2:9
The world says you must prove your worth.
Jesus says, “I chose you.”
Before you accomplished anything, before anyone noticed you, before you felt worthy, God set His love upon you.
You are not forgotten. You are chosen.
You Are Forgiven
The enemy loves to remind believers of their failures.
But Jesus reminds us of His grace.
Because of Christ:
- You are forgiven.
- You are redeemed.
- You are accepted.
- You are no longer condemned.
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
— Romans 8:1
When God looks at you, He sees you clothed in the righteousness of His Son.
You Are Being Made New
Receiving a new identity does not mean we instantly become perfect. It means we belong to Jesus and are being transformed day by day.
There may still be struggles. There may still be weaknesses. But your identity is no longer “sinner trying harder.”
Your identity is “saint being changed by grace.”
God is patiently shaping you into the image of Christ.
Live From Your Identity, Not For It Many believers spend their lives trying to earn what God has already given. We don’t obey to become loved. We obey because we are loved. We don’t pursue holiness to gain acceptance. We pursue holiness because we have already been accepted. Our identity is not something we achieve. It is something we receive.
Final Thought
The world may call you broken. Your past may call you guilty. Your fears may call you unworthy. But Jesus calls you His. And that changes everything. So stop listening to every voice that tells you who you used to be. Lift your eyes to Christ and remember who you are now.
You are forgiven. You are chosen. You are loved. You are a child of God. You are a new creation.
And because you belong to Jesus, your truest identity is not found in your past—it is found in Him.
